The Trans-Mongolian Railway connects the Trans-Siberian Railway from Ulan Ude in Russia to Erenhot and Beijing in China through the capital Ulan Bator. For domestic transport, daily trains run from Ulaanbaatar to Darkhan, Sukhbaatar, and Erdenet, as well as Zamyn-Uud, Choir and Sainshand. There are three kinds of main rail routes that can say the longest single continuous service in the world. The first main route is the Trans-Siberian which has 9,288 kilometres (5,772 miles) length, spanning 8 time zones and taking about 7 days to complete its journey.

The second primary route is the Trans-Manchurian, which coincides with the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya (a stop 12 km east of Karymskaya, in Chita Oblast), about 1000 km east of Lake Baikal. The third primary route is the Trans-Mongolian, which coincides with the Trans-Siberian as far as Ulan Ude on Lake Baikal's eastern shore. From Ulan-Ude the Trans-Mongolian heads south to Ulaan-Baatar before making its way southeast to Beijing.

In 1991, a fourth route running further to the north was finally completed, after more than five decades of sporadic work. Known as the Baikal Amur Mainline (BAM), this recent extension departs from the Trans-Siberian line at Taishet several hundred miles west of Lake Baikal and passes the lake at its northernmost extremity. The weekly Trans-Mongolian (train 4 eastbound, train 3 westbound) train leaves Moscow for Beijing every Tuesday night.

The 7,621 km (4,735 mile) journey takes 6 days. This train crosses Siberia, cuts across Mongolia and the Gobi desert, then enters China and passes through the Great Wall. There's a second weekly train between Moscow and Ulan Bator (train 6 eastbound, train 5 westbound). Alternatively, there are daily trains between Moscow and Irkutsk and a daily train between Irkutsk and Ulan Bator (train 263/264). There are two trains a week between Ulan Bator and Beijing.

Trains from South to Mongolia.

It is a Beijing – Ulaanbaatar

The train departs every Tuesday all year around. And in Summer from middle of June to middle of October, on Saturday, the additional train makes a voyage between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar.

Further, train # 3 stopovers in Ulaanbaatar every Thursday on the way to Moscow. It is a Beijing – Ulaanbaatar – Moscow express.

The next train from China is train # 33. This one is Hoh hot to Ulaanbaatar direct train, departs from Hoh hot every Friday and Monday.

The last one is Erlian – Ulaanbaatar train # 21, leaves from Erlian every on Saturday and Tuesday.

And then, all trains from China; make travel again to China from Mongolia. So, train numbers will be even numbers. Chinese and Mongolian trains alternatively make a journey according to their timetable.

The only train is Chinese one is train # 3, even it becomes train # 4.

Train from North to Mongolia.

Mongolian Railway has 60 years history and makes international train travel in the south to Asia and in the north to Europe. From this year, the next biggest establishment is under the construction to the west. Hope we can take a train to go directly East Europe not soon after.

Train # 6 and 4 come from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar every on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

But, train # 6 departs in the winter time 2 – 4 times travel. And then, departs to Moscow from Ulaanbaatar, every on Tuesday and Friday, Thursday.

Mongolian train # 6 goes to Moscow on Friday and then return on Wednesday and Russian train # 6 departs from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar and return to Moscow on Tuesday.

The next train not from Moscow is train # 264. It is also named 362. It is a only 1 train. Make a journey to Ulaanbaatar everyday in the evening and running 2 days.
